It is time for all talented music makers to start crafting a song that will become the “Gauteng song”.

MIO, together with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, is calling all Gauteng-based talented music makers to compose one piece of music that a Gauteng resident can easily relate to.

It has to be a song that best describes the fast pace, the townships, the urban lifestyle, the mix of traditions, the old and new Gauteng, and all the elements that have played a role in building the province.

The Gauteng Songs Competition is an initiative aimed at giving Gauteng-based music makers - known and unknown - a platform to prove how well they know their province musically.

Open to all genres

Uniquely, there is no age or music genre restriction in the Gauteng Songs competition. The competition is open to everyone in Gauteng Province who is talented enough to showcase their amazing musical skills. Whether it’s jazz, rock, kwaito, RnB, Blues, house, opera, choir, afro-pop, gospel or African, whatever you choose to call it, we will be your listener. Any style of music is allowed as long as your composition can tell the diverse musical stories of Gauteng.

Prizes

The competition runs from 15 March to the 15 April, and winners will be announced 29 April 2010. After the winners are announced, the top three will fly to Cape Town where they will spend two days at the Red Bull Music Studios recording the “Three Winners’ Collaboration”. Finally, ten winning songs will then be packaged in CD format, which will be placed at venues where those attending the 2010 FIFA World Cup are expected to visit. The project will also be distributed to all SA radio stations for possible play-listing and also made available on Exact Mobile for online and mobile sale. Do we need to also mention the money prizes? What do you loose? Nothing, as you will still own the rights for your music.

One thing we are certain about is that Gauteng has a lot of musical talent, and we can’t wait to hear how you interpret your province musically! Remember, it is only you who can show the world what Gauteng is made of. The world is waiting, watching and listening for what we have in store for them during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Be that voice and the talent to shine during this world event!

If you think you have what it takes to tell Gauteng’s stories in a musical format and you know exactly how to use whatever you can get your hands on to come up with the Gauteng Song, then you do not have to wait any more! Remember, your song should be of a good quality for possible radio playlisting. Good luck!

You can enter the competition online here or deliver your music to Music Industry Online offices in Rosebank.

I fully support the idea though I am not a musician or a singer. I have always wished to have this kind of collaboration by our South African singers as it was done by USA-we are the world. I think you guys must make sure you select good talent on this one because we need to listen to good quality as we are still blown away by USA. We need to have this kind of CD representing Gautengers or RSA as a whole for many years to come, no matter what genre. I am certain that many talented will come out in numbers for such an opportunity for people who have waited long not know where to start now is the time let\'s show the world we can do it. \"Go Gauteng Go\"
