After a very successful collaboration with rock-emo-punk band, Straatligkinders, last year, South African hip-hop outfit Koldproduk is upping its game to a whole new level this year. They are back with a banging track that features acclaimed French singer Greg Basso. The track, titled “Round and Round”, will be on their much-anticipated sophomore full-length album, Prepare to Rise, and a very cool video is also in the pipeline. MIO attended the video shoot for “Round and Round” in Milpark, Johannesburg last week.

When we arrived at Atlas Studios around lunchtime, the crew had already shot a few scenes and was now preparing to shoot the main scene. Cast members were wearing interesting outfits, notably Basso who was in a Joker costume and the group’s MC, Moki Sage, who wore a purple and black outfit .

Sage immediately greeted us and introduced us to the rest of the cast, which included Koldproduk’s songbird T* Spark, turntablist DJ Soosh, five hot girls and Nicky Campos - a prolific film director.

Campos, who has produced videos for heavyweights like Kabelo, Danny K and HHP, briefly explained the hilarious costumes: “Basically this song is about the dynamics of relationships so it’s like boys versus girls. We decided to take an Alice in Wonderland [fairytale] theme, keeping it fun but with a bit of concept in it.”

It was also very interesting to learn how “Round and Round” came about. Moki said producers had to exchange and join pieces of the song via the web as it was recorded in Johannesburg and Paris at the same time. T* Spark, who sprinkled a short verse on the energised song, takes the role of Alice in the captivating video.

Commenting on how they recorded the song Moki said “This song shows the beauty of the internet and we’re really honoured to have a star like Greg Basson in the song”.”

Our conversation with Moki was briefly interrupted by the arrival of Cape Town producer Ameen Harron and up-and-coming rapper HC, who had come to check how the shoot was going.

After a few minutes Moki continued; “When I wrote this song, I was dealing with a breakup from my previous relationship, so I fit that into the song you know, just explaining the dynamics of a relationship.”

On the sophomore album, Koldproduk also features Straatligkinders and a number of noteworthy MCs, including Zubz, HC, and VDE. The album will be released in April this year.

“It’s all about flavor on this album and I think this one surpasses our first album. We were more focused and prepared when we did this project so there is no doubt about its success.”

With the standards their debut album, All Under Heaven, set a few years back, it is yet to be seen whether Koldproduk still has the magic touch to turn the music industry upside down and catapult their industry rating to higher levels.
