Sam Mtukudzi (21), one of Zimbabwe’s most promising young musicians, has died in a car crash. He was the son of one of Africa’s most successful musicians, Oliver Mtukudzi. Sam passed away in the early hours of Monday morning (15 March 2010).
Sam and his sound engineer, Owen Chimhare (24), were driving from Harare to Norton when they were involved in a car accident, just before Pamuzinda Highway Escape, at around 0100hrs this morning. They both died on the spot.
Born on 1st April 1988, Sam first showed his musical nature at the age of 4 when he started strumming on his Father’s guitar.
Sam released his first album, Rume Rimwe in 2008 (Sheer Sound) and was working on his second album.
He performed all over the world including in countries such as Canada, United States of America, Lesotho, Swaziland, Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, South Africa, Nigeria, Ireland and United Kingdom.
He also performed in South Africa at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and the Winter Jazz Festival.
"Our deepest sympathies, commiserations and prayers are with the Mtukudzi and Chimhare families, as well as Sam and Owen’s many friends and fans, at this incredibly difficult time," says Sheer Sound in a media release.
