Artists/DJ: Soul Brothers
What clicks in your mind when you hear the word ‘Ballads’? True, you think of all those romantic tunes by the likes of Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Tracy Chapman, Teddy Pendergrass, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Imagine listening to Soul Brothers on a Sunday, offering you the same ballads but blended with a South African flavor with the lyrics sung in Zulu. I am talking about the great local soul ballad legends people!
Mense, you don’t just mention Soul Brothers name and leave it at that… No ways, this group deserves every compliment because their work stands out. I’ll be honest though, the time I received this CD, I gave it a listen in a different occasion but still didn’t know how to review it. One thing for sure, this album is going to touch your mind, body and soul. And before you realise it, you’ll be on the dance floor, holding your ladies hand so you can have a lover’s slow dance session.
This is the type of music that hits you hard and after a listen; you just end up felling all lovey-dovey. For sure, after all the years that the group have been on the music scene, finally, Pauline Mkhize has decided to select eighteen songs for this super compilation. Hai ke, this is hot! Thumbs up to the two uncles and their band because the compilation is powerful!
One thing I like on this album is the role that live instruments played. I guess you know how it feels when you realise that the song you are listening to has a number of live instruments playing… Live instruments separate the project from the rest and they also give the album a weight, making it sounds original and more appealing! Listen to this project and enjoy the live drums, keyboards, saxophone and guitar.
This project will take you on a soul journey; sometimes I felt like stepping onto the dance floor so I could be more in the zone! The songs are touching, piercing through my soul like an irreplaceable moment that does not want to fade away. ‘Ballads’ reminds me of the time when music was simple, basic and wonderful. Like their name says, the project is all about soul!
