Teargas to headline Human Rights Day celebrations

Not sure what to do on the public holiday of 22 March? Join the crowds as they head for Jozi's top live music venue - The Town Square at Gold Reef City Theme Park.

Here well-known South African hip-hop band, Teargas, will take the stage at 13:00 and 14:30 in celebration of Human Rights Day.

Teargas is a trendy trio made up of Ntokozo "K.O." Mdluli and two brothers, Ezee "Ma-E" Hanabe and Bantu "Ntukza" Hanabe. Its 2006 song Chance was a smash hit on the UKhozi Fm Top 20 Chart, the Y-fm International top 20 and the Metro Fm National Top 20. The follow-up single, Teargas Anthem, debuted at No. 19 on the Metro FM Top 20 charts and shot straight to the no. 1 position, two weeks later.

Teargas made a major breakthrough with an album titled Wafa Wafa (meaning Do or Die), released in April 2008. The album featured artists like Bongo Riot, urban pop group Gang of Instrumentals and other up-and-coming rock artists. With a more mature and experimental approach, the CD brings out the high-energy signature sound the group is famous for. The last official single off the album was Take u out featuring 2lip.

The group has also been nominated for a number of SAMA and Metro FM Music awards since it was established in 2006. Teargas walked away with the Best Group accolade at the '08 Annual Metro FM Awards and scored its first SAMA victory in the Best Rap category for 2009 for the album Wafa Wafa.

Teargas is just part of the spectacular line-up that Gold Reef City Theme is offering over the Human Rights Day long weekend. Backin 5 - a five-piece male vocal group with musical influences ranging from Grace Jones to Ladysmith Black Mambazo - takes the stage at 13:00 and 14:30 on Human Rights Day (21 March). The band has careers in the entertainment industry spanning ten years respectively and talents as diverse as singing, dance, TV directing and acting, Backin 5 are consummate showmen. They offer an entertainment package that will arrest your senses and leave you longing for more.
